EVOLUTION AT THE OASIS : ARTICLE 4

ON EVOLUTION , EVOLUTIONARIES & EVOLUTIONARY AGENTS

EVOLUTION, as defined in the 1972 edition of the World Book Dictionary, includes:

1) "the theory that all forms of life develop from earlier forms through a series of physical changes. According to evolution, the first mammal developed from a type of reptile, and ultimately all forms are traced back to a simple, perhaps, single-celled organism." 2) In Philosophy, "the theory that a process or progressive change, with the development of more complex entities, characterizes all force and matter and matter in the universe."

First, I want to thank OASIS TV, Inc. for giving me my first "official job title" as "Evolutionary Agent" In 1990, the bio on my poetry book "Eggstraordinary Eggs" stated that I was .."learning to be an Evolutionary Agent" and now I am one.

It is the concept of Evolution as an omnipresent force in the universe (along with the concept of "Gestalt" which teaches that "the whole is more than the sum of its parts") that has molded my thinking, teaching and writing for many years.

It provides the broadest framework I've found for understanding and providing a context for our personal, community and planetary lives. Therefore, I share it , and invite you to explore its significance in your own lives.

One of the more extraordinary concepts I ran across in my youth was that of the multi-person entity, described in Theodore Sturgeon's Sci Fi classic, "More Than Human" built around his short story "Baby Makes Three". It told a tale of individuals who were enhanced by the presence of others with whom they felt an unusual kinship, and where each had a skill or ability that complemented the others. When they were together, they felt "whole" or "complete" and when one was accidentally killed or lost, another was sought to complete that "gestalt".

In modern times, a "group mind" fulfills that archetype and the beginnings of such thinking can be seen in the consciousness of tribes, of mobs, of nations, of corporations and in "Community Psychology" where communities are treated as entities similar to the way a psychotherapist treats an individual.

Extrapolating into the future, it is not too large a leap to understand the concept of a planetary consciousness where individual humans are single cells in the body of Humanity. Such ideas are expressed in the Arica Institute philosophy that "humanity is only one spirit", in Peter Russell's "Global Brain", and in Barbara Marx Hubbard's prophetic teachings of "the birth of Humanity".

There is even some evidence that cetaceans such as whales and dolphins have already evolved such "collective consciousness" so that new whale songs simultaneously appear in widely distant parts of the planet. Perhaps humanity is not too far behind as global events like Live Aid, the forthcoming 24 hour Millennium Television Network broadcast of New Year's Eve 2000, the internet, and numerous global meditations are synchronizing our nervous systems to be more connected and evolved.

"Evolutionaries" and "Evolutionary Agents" are clearly those individuals I've identified or who self-identify as promoting the forces of evolution on the planet towards harmony, wholeness, peace on Earth and "a world that works for everyone".

Associated with this column, I have begun to identify "Evolutionaries" as those people, prominently known or not, who foster the path of human evolution. Among those relatively well known, to name a only a few of many, I would include: Barbara Marx Hubbard, John Lilly, R. Buckminster Fuller, Peter Russell, Robert Muller, Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) , Marianne Williamson, Shirley MacLaine, Ted Turner, Alan Watts, Jean Houston , Martin Luther King, Jr. , Mother Theresa, Mahatma Gahdhi , Ralph Blum and Terrence McKenna. I've named "Doc Dave" Lewis, D.C. as the first in the series, "Evolutionaries of our Time" to acknowledge the life and work of someone relatively unknown who is significantly contributing to the evolution of humanity.

If you care to nominate someone for recognition, including yourself, as an "Evolutionary", please send me a few paragraphs and, if possible, a website, for consideration and "publication" on the Oasis Portal.

It also seems to me that those few who foster "rapid evolution" are called "revolutionaries"

To draw a fine distinction, while "Evolutionaries" are by definition "Evolutionary Agents", "Evolutionary Agents" may not necessarily be "Evolutionaries" but may promote human evolution in quieter ways.

A description that I liked very much of an "Evolutionary Agent" was recently sent to me anonymously and I reproduce it here:

EVOLUTIONARY AGENTS

"the evolutionary agent works for positivity, for change in the daily vibrational conditions down here on Earth, on the material and psychic planes.

the evolutionary agent receives her or his 'rewards' from seeing the improvement and upliftment of the whole.

Consiously or not, the evolutionary agent is born knowing she or he has a job to do in this lifetime. as the years go by, and given certain conditions, the evolutionary agent moves from the unconscious knowing to the arena of conscious action.

It's a self-selected, self-initiating kind of thing. No other person can bestow this gift on you. You have elected yourself into the position.

And each evolutionary agent has specific tasks, specific to them, their incarnated job description that in fact only they can accomplish, should they choose to do so.

The evolutionary agent must not be attached to the outcome, to the result, but must operate in an atmosphere of non-attachment, in the buddhist sense.

As the evolutionary agent goes about her or his tasks, within her or his particular sphere of influence, she or he is able to light a spark in other (conscious or unconscious) evolutionary agents. with a smile, with a look, a word-- or even a thought!

As the evolutionary agent goes through her or his life, she or he knows when to speak and when to be silent. when to act and when to not act. when to think and when to not think.
